Query re Gresham Road

I am researching my family history and found that one of my ancestors died at 69 Gresham Road, Middlesbrough in 1908. The address was shown as the County Borough Asylum. Does anyone know if this was a mental institution as the name suggests? I would like to have any information regarding this establishment. The address doesn't appear in the 1901 census so I would be interested to know when Gresham Road was built.

Hello there - the only County Borough Asylum was on Marton Road which is now known as St Luke's Hospital. It was opened in 1898.
If your ancestor was in the asylum at the time of the 1901 census, he will be difficult to find as patients were only identified by their initials. (This establishment is very difficult to find on the census, but if you enter 'George Stevens Pope' he comes up as the 'head of the establishment' and you can look at who else lived there - many pages worth of names and initials.)
Gresham Road is on the Godfrey map of Middlesbrough that I have, dated 1913, and I would guess it was there a while before that as it is in the middle of a fairly well established are of Middlesbrough.
Hope this is helpful.
